Philosophy regarding collaboration

I regard my practice as being an amplified extension of my day-to-day interactions with the world around me. I’m driven by curiosity and a desire to learn, and so find myself collaborating with people from all sorts of disciplines, be it materials science or poetry. It’s all fair game.

In any collaboration I’m looking to explore the third space – the space neither myself nor my collaborator could have reached without the cross-fertilisation of ideas and skills from different backgrounds. Conversation is an essential part of this process, so if you are interested in working with me (either on a specific project or just as a general probability sometime in the future when the right project turns up), please get in touch either via the contact form or by leaving a comment on the relevant blog post.

What I think I’m interested in

So, bearing in mind the above and the fact that I generally consider most things to be interesting, there are a few areas that I think are especially interesting and would particularly welcome the opportunity to work on projects that relate to them:

  • Anything involving participant-led and/or emergent mechanics
  • Things responding to place
  • Exploring collaborative frameworks
  • Locative technology

Schools & Workshops

I have a recent, enhanced CRB disclosure and public liability insurance cover up to £5,000,000.

I completed a training programme with ALISS (now Education Arts Service West Midlands) and Creative Partnerships in 2007-8 and have since worked on schools projects in the East and West Midlands. My philosophy to aim for a participant-led, collaborative approach also applies to my work within an education setting. Find out more about work I do in schools by reading my blog posts tagged “schools”.

I can work with schools to deliver workshops across a range of curriculum areas, with my experience currently mostly being in creative approaches to STEM subjects.

I’m particularly passionate about the “WOW” projects I have worked on with schools in the Leicester area and would especially welcome the opportunity to work on more projects of this nature (immersive experiences utilising game mechanics to fully involve and enthuse the pupils). Please see my series of posts evaluating the Song for Skatz project for more details on why I think these are important and how I think they can be developed further.

I have also delivered workshops and presentations to students in Higher Education and to adults. Through my work with BARG I also regularly organise pervasive games events open to the general public. Please see the BARG website for more details.

I also help run fizzPOP, a collaborative learning space for creative use of technology. Here we run formal and informal activities, workshops and events where people of all ages can make stuff, often with an emphasis on combining electronics, but not in any way restricted only to that!
